A couple of issues with 4.02 release

sturdy
Hi guys,

I just installed the 4.02 release but noticed a couple of issues that are stoppers for me so I will revert back to 3.4.6-1 which appears quite stable.

1) No horizontal scroll bars on any view. Could this be a Unity issue?
2) Drag-and-drop from clipboard and within the person editor does not drop where released but at the bottom of the editor. Up/Down arrows on editor still work correctly.
3) Two crashes as a result of the spell checker libraries. I'll look into this later but have not had a problem with 4.01 and 4.02 when running trunk.

HTH and I can submit bug reports if needed.

Sturdy

1) No horizontal scroll bars on any view. Could this be a Unity issue?

For 13.04 Kubuntu I needed to uninstall some unity specific packages to get Gramps working correct.   As Canonical does those specific 'see overlay scrolbar if your mouse is near the edge', yes, I would think a unity issue.
Will Gramps fix this?
We use GTK library as upstream, not unity. So if this can be reproduced with a GTK theme, it is a bug in Gramps. Otherwise Canonical should push this upstream for inclusion.

2) Drag-and-drop from clipboard and within the person editor does not drop
where released but at the bottom of the editor. Up/Down arrows on editor
still work correctly.

I tested this here and I obtain same behavior. So a bug in 4.0.x, please post a bug ticket on the bug tracker.

3) Two crashes as a result of the spell checker libraries. I'll look into

I don't understand. You say crash but then no problem with 4.02 running trunk. Trunk will be 4.1, it should not be compared with 4.0. You need the gramps40 branch to track 4.0 development. A crash is normally not bug of Gramps but bug with the used library.

Issue #1: I've tried different desktops avail with Unity but no change. I have little love for Unity but it is the most popular Ubuntu default. I will look into other distros.

Issue #2: Drag-n-drop sometimes works correctly. It seems to help if you drag past the drop point then return when done slowly. I'll open a bug report.

Issue #3: My bad, not trunk. I just svn up and see it says 4.03 r----. Spell check was previously stable there but I haven't used it in a couple of weeks.

Here is the msg I receive with the 4.02 release:
The crashed program seems to use third-party or local libraries:

/usr/local/lib/libgtkspell3-3.so.0.1.0
/usr/local/lib/libosmgpsmap-1.0.so.0.0.0

It is highly recommended to check if the problem persists without those first.

You can install 'ubuntu tweaks', it allows easily to uncheck this feature, and to retrieve the previous feature.
You can also install and use gnome-shell

I'm personnaly not able to test it, as I'm under Ubuntu 12.04 with gnome-shell.

Hi,

I am using 4.0.2 under a Ubuntu 12.04LTS -like, without Unity, and I
have a horizontal scroll bar on views. See "scrollbar_h.png".

No real crash for me, only one warning into console.

** (gramps:4673): CRITICAL **: check_range: assertion `spell->speller

And the context menu into Note Editor disabled.

Installing the different desktops leaves the hacks of unity in place. You actually have to remove unity stuff to go to the normal GTK (Gnome) behavior..
Eg, I think you obtain normal scrollbar if you uninstall
overlay-scrollbar-gtk3
overlay-scrollbar-gtk2

so try that and see if scrollbar is back. If so, post a bug on launchpad for ubuntu.

Re: A couple of issues with 4.02 release

Now this is interesting. I've been using ubuntu 13.10 since release a couple of weeks ago and had not noticed the missing horizontal scrollbars until I installed Gramps 4.02. I have just noticed my Nautilus also suffers the same so it is definitely ubuntu or my installation. This does not appear to be a Gramps issue but, strangely, my 3.4.6-1 install did have the horizontal handles.

I removed the overlays as you suggested but no change other than return to the standard scrollbars which I much prefer (thanks, the default scrollbar handles are a pita).

The solution is perhaps ubuntu-tweaks
It solves such problem for me under Ubuntu 12.04

Well, partial success.
With ubuntu tweaks ?
See the attached screenshot. I played with the various tweaks but no joy. I reset unity and some (?) scrollbars are now back but Nautilus horizontal is still missing and Gramps is partial. The upper people view pane is still missing the horizontal scrollbar but it is present in the bottom pane. This is obviously beyond my level! Thanks to all for the assist.
How do you reset unity ?

What do you use ? Unity or gnome-shell ?

I use gnome-shell, and before tweaking it, under gnome-shell, I always had unity scrollbars.
As I'm using 12.04, I can't be sure it solves the problem.

In your case, I should first tweak before uninstalling these unity packets.
Perhaps install again and tweak after ?

Not sure.

Perhaps install again and tweak after ?
I have tested on a machine that have Ubuntu 12.04 + gnome-shell, the scrollbars are like previously with gnome2 under unity and gnome classic.

I hope and think that it will be the same.

Well, partial success. I played with the various tweak tools but no joy. I reset unity and some (?) scrollbars are now back but Nautilus horizontal is still missing and Gramps is partial. The upper people view pane is still missing the horizontal scrollbar but it is present in the bottom pane. I tried to include a screenshot but the list complained about the size. I've also noticed that the Nautilus size, type and date columns can no longer be pushed off the right side so there is a behaviorial difference too.

This is obviously beyond my level! Thanks to all for the assist.

Jerome,

Thanks... that improves the appearance but doesn't retrieve the missing scrollbar.
The solution is perhaps ubuntu-tweaks
It solves such problem for me under Ubuntu 12.04

Hi Alain,

Here is how I reset unity:

That did return the horizontal scrollbar except to gramps 4.02 upper view pane as I mentioned before. I get the same behavior in both unity and gnome-shell. I find the Nautilus horizontal scrollbar also appears after the unity reset when the window is narrowed almost completely so this is a different issue probably specific to Nautilus. As Benny mentioned earlier these are probably GTK3 conversion issues not yet properly configured.

How do you reset unity ?

What do you use ? Unity or gnome-shell ?

I use gnome-shell, and before tweaking it, under gnome-shell, I always had unity scrollbars.
As I'm using 12.04, I can't be sure it solves the problem.

Not sure.

It is probably GTK3 related as it not working in GTK-3.8 and GTK-3.10 in
both Linux and Windows. It works only up to GTK-3.6

Another 4.0.2. gramps-related GTK3 bug, which even cites a
developer.gnome.org example which fails, is:

That example works fine for me with Gtk-3.10.6 in Windows, it works for
them if downgraded to Gtk-3.8.4.
So there is not such problem in stable maintenance branches (even minor
number version) but just in unstable development versions (odd minor
number version).
