Allura upgrade: what has happened to the web svn browse

Tim Lyons

Can we get the side by side comparison of changes back for revisions,
and also the change history for a specific item or part of a tree, and
the history with all the commit message showing, and the annotations
that showed who changed what.

I think this is all from ViewVC, which I found immensely helpful, and
used all the time. Can we have it back please?

I still have to check out the code myself, so am not current yet. Definitely something to look into
There are svn clients out there that can do that however. Eg RapidSVN http://solitarygeek.com/linux/subversion-and-rapidsvn

I agree: ViewVC will be missed until Allura catches up. A feature request already exists:
https://sourceforge.net/p/forge/feature-requests/6/

You should go vote for it. I did.

The feature request is just for side-by-side comparison, which is only one of the features of ViewVC that I miss.

Isn't it possible to provide ViewVC on top of Allura (or as a viewer for Allura - whatever the right terminology is)?

ViewVC isn't available in the Allura framework. It isn't something I can "turn on" in the admin interface. I suppose it would be possible for someone to host a ViewVC outside of sourceforge and then point it at our repository.

I too used ViewVC a lot and until it reappears I have to
admit I will view the new Allura as a step backwards,
with dropped functionality and nothing obviously gained.

You should in theory be able to set up ViewVC in the project's web space (I think it's VMHost on the control panel, but I haven't had time to dig into it). That was the pre-migration claim: That they're getting rid of the hosted apps and each project is to do its own hosting in its web space. I don't know if they're actually ready to support that yet, and I'm holding back upgrading Gtk-OSX because the only thing that's left there is the phpbb web forum (Gnome doesn't have anything like that, and some users seem to prefer it over the mailing lists) and there's no point in migrating until it can migrate too.

Regards,
John Ralls

+1 !!

So not only is it a backwards step but also (according to another thread) the http code browse list is broken!

Actually, Rapidsvn does not have a built-in diff tool, it just depends which tool you link into, for example Meld which seems to do side-by-side comparison.
