Arabic Issues

M. Bashir Al-Noimi

Hi all :-)

  1. I'm working on Arabic translation from some days and I've finished a part of translation, so you can add it till Arabic translation complete (see the attached file).
  2. Pedigree View need to be shown as bidi-mode look at this bug:

Unfortunately, I have no idea what a .7z file is. What do we do with it?

7z is the only one "open format" for compression under windows OS ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7z

Maybe, we need to use something like http://p7zip.sourceforge.net/ for
opening it under Gnu/Linux ...

$ 7za x file.7z

or Muhammad, you may send a simple .zip ...

Re: Arabic Issues

For linux you need the 7zr utility:
sudo apt-get install p7zip
, after which KDE recognizes it, hope it is the same for Gnome.

Re: Arabic Issues

bm-5
In reply to this post by M. Bashir Al-Noimi
Muhammad,

some issues:
1/ you need to give the file the name language code.po. What is the language
code for arabic?
2/Read http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Translating_GRAMPS
carefully. Do the check test
(http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Translating_GRAMPS#Testing_your_.po_file)

If I do that on your file: ./check_po gramps.po
I get: 32 %s mismatches. This leads to crashes of GRAMPS, you must
correct them
before we can add arabic to the languages GRAMPS is translated in.

If you are on windows and you cannot run check_po on windows, consider
downloading the live cd
(http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Linux_Genealogy_CD
) so you
can run this utility.

3/you mention a bidi error, can you elaborate as you give no link.

Benny

Do you mean that the brackets that link the parents to the children need to be reversed?  So instead of "   -[   " we need to show them as "   ]-   "?

Yes, this is what i meant , brackets that link the parents to the children need to be reversed, all RTL laguages need that (like Arabic, Persian .. etc), and because of I've no experience in python i couldn't solve this big, so i need somebody from Gramps fans so fix RTL bug.

Muhammad,

In this case, you should not send too big file on mailing list, think on
people with 56ko connection ...
Now, you know some individual addresses (Don, Benny).

What is the local code for your gramps.po ?
dz, ma, tn, ly, sy, ae ?
You are the only one who knows what kind/locale is the most apopriated !!!

I find http://www.arabeyes.org/
Maybe you will find more informations on this site.

Re: Arabic Issues- po format

bm-5
This means you should call your gramps.po, ar.po

Concerning the LTR problem in the view, please file a bug at
bugs.gramps-project.org (see
http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_report_bugs )

If you correct the ar.po to remove the errors, and resend we'll add it to
GRAMPS. And I think localisation is normally send to Alex.

Benny

Hi,

I already had a look at that. The lines connecting the boxes are easy to fix. I'll commit a fix for that later the day or tomorrow.

Cheers,

Re: Arabic Issues

bm-5
Muhammed,

windows or not doesn't change the possibility for crash.
Let me explain what is wrong in your ar.po file:

msg nr: 291, lineno: 1863 (fuzzy)
msgid "%s and %s"
msgstr "?"

So you translate a string with two parameters to one with no
parameters. That is
an error. It should be:
msg nr: 291, lineno: 1863 (fuzzy)
msgid "%s and %s"
msgstr  "%s ? %s"

Another example:
msg nr: 673, lineno: 3777 (fuzzy)
msgid "Repository: %s"
msgstr "????????"

Should probably be:
msgstr "%s :????????"

Benny.

Re: Arabic Issues

bm-5
In reply to this post by M. Bashir Al-Noimi
All,

with this arabic translation, I think we need to change some coding
practices to
make this possible.

Some examples:
1/ msgid "%s and %s"
How is the arabic translator supposed to make this right to left?

2/ constructs like:  _("Repository") + ": " + repo.title()
I remember the complaint of some translators because they needed to transla
te
'Repository', 'Repository:' and 'Repository -'
For right to left translation this is very important however. Or can we
check on
that in the code to construct differently?

Muhammed, if you see issues like the above not showing correctly in
GRAMPS, you
should collect them and post to the devel mailing list so they can be
corrected

Benny

Benny,

If you noticed that "(fuzzy)" mark string is there, that's mean that i didn't translate this string by my self , this string translated by auto translator.

I'm using "po edit" for translating, soh all strings which has "(fuzzy)" mark will not compile to *.mo file, by result no crash will happen cuz after compiling *.po to *.mo .

Items like this should be "%{keyword1}s and %{keyword2}s"

So, something like:

 %{father}s and %{mother}s

Python can map by substitution. We should be using this. Pretty much any
translatable string that has more that one substitution should use this.
If you find any that aren't, submit a bug.

We should not be doing this. Again, if anyone finds anything like this,
submit it as a bug.

Re: Arabic Issues

bm-5
Kees,

could you change check_po so that the check 'Last character' can be omitted
?
Well, not that important, but this makes little sense for RTL languages so
it
would be culturally correct to take this into account. N no idea if in arab
ic
they put the point . to the right or not.

From the check_po, I see two strings that need changing already :
msg nr: 291, lineno: 1863 (fuzzy)
msgid "%s and %s"

and
msg nr: 1375, lineno: 7284 (fuzzy)
msgid "Copyright %d %s"

I'll see if I have time tonight to change them.

Benny

PS: it is amazing how many bugs I see in linux the moment I work with arabi
c
texts (Konsole, Kompare, mailprog, ..., they all start to give weird font
rendering issues...).

Re: Arabic Issues

Muhammad,

attached you will find a modified version of the pedigree view. Unzip that file and replace the file in the DataViews folder (preferably create a backup first).
For the other readers I attached a screenshot too ;-)

What I changed for RTL-locales is:

a) The lines connecting the boxes are mirrored.

b) The text inside the boxes is right aligned. Only remaining Problem here is when both, arabic and western texts are both used. So I thing the alignment of the text inside the box is not dependant on the locale gramps is running in, but depends on the text to be displayed.

If you are fine with the modified pedigree I'll commit this to version control for the patch be included in the next release of GRAMPS.

Cheers, Martin.

After 25 years it comes in handy that I lived in Amman Jordan :-) Not that I speak
or write any Arabic, but I know the characters a bit because I wrote the firmware
for a computer terminal that could handle Arabic and Latin characters.

In Arabic there is a dot on the left (of course).

I'll change check_po a bit. I think it will have a few new commandline options.
Maybe:
--rtl-language   to say this is a right-to-left language
   --skip-last-char-check

Kind regards, Kees Bakker

All,

with this arabic translation, I think we need to change some coding practices to
make this possible.

Some examples:
1/ msgid "%s and %s"
How is the arabic translator supposed to make this right to left?
2/ constructs like:  _("Repository") + ": " + repo.title()
I remember the complaint of some translators because they needed to transla
te
'Repository', 'Repository:' and 'Repository -'
For right to left translation this is very important however. Or can we check on
that in the code to construct differently?

Muhammed, if you see issues like the above not showing correctly in GRAMPS, you
should collect them and post to the devel mailing list so they can be corrected
All these last problems are not found cuz GTK gui solve it by default for all RTL languages.

I'm reading and writing Arabic so i know excatly where the problems can be found for example:

The line 12428:
example: \"%s\" or \"%s\"

Translated it to without problem:
مثال: \"%s\" أو \"%s\"
