Descendant Report - missing location

Peter Griffin-2

Hello

I am using the following system:

Gramps 4.2.2
Ubuntu 16.4 LTS

I am wondering if anybody has experienced the following when generating a "Descendant report"

Descendants of aaa

3. xxx (b. 1964-09-29)

2. yyy (b. 1942-08-20, d. 1969-08-19 - Montreal, Qc)

2. zzz (b. 1951-07-06, d. 2012-07-02 - )

An explanation of the data is as follows:

  • xxx, birth date specified, no location specified - all OK
  • yyy, birth & death dates specified, death location specified and PRINTED - all OK
  • zzz, birth & death dates specified, death location specified and NOT PRINTED - error

                Observations:

This issue appears frequently in the report.

  • When no location is specified there is no "-" at the appropriate location in the record, see "xxx"
  • When the record is Ok  and a location is specified, there is a "-" followed by the location, see "yyy"
  • when there is an error and a location is specified then we see the "-" but no location is printed, see "zzz"
Can anybody give me any guidance as to how to proceed,

With thanks

Peter Griffin.

Re: Descendant Report - missing location

I'm using a newer version of Gramps, but...  If you have 'Edit/Preferences/Enable Automatic place title generation' disabled, then your report will only contain the 'Title' field from the places.  Depending on how your places were created, they may not have a 'Title' field.

If you have 'Edit/Preferences/Enable Automatic place title generation' enabled, then the report should always contain an automatically generated date.

It is also possible that Gramps will not display a place, even with the automatic generation, if the Event date is not 'covered' by the ranges of place dates.  This will only happen if the place has ONLY date ranges or other valid dates attached and the Event date was not in that range.  If the place has a 'non-dated' alternative name then that will be used when the Event date doesn't fit one of the defined ranges.

It is generally a good idea IMO to have an undated alternative name for a place, otherwise you have to be very careful to cover all the possible dates that you might use with the place.  I sometimes use the 'after 1900' type of date to cover more recent possible dates as well.  And similar with 'before 1640' for earlier dates.

Re: Descendant Report - missing location

Paul

Thank-you for your response, unfortunately I am not having any success.

If I may, a few additional facts. I made a new fictitious person, a fictitious location in Canada with the following results:

  • Using a location of Canada, all is well.
  • Using the fictitious within Canada it does not work.
  • Errors only appear in the Descendant report. The Detailed Descendant report and the Relationship screen both have the correct info.

Could this be an issue with the Descendant Report itself ??

Thanks for your time

Regards Peter

Re: Descendant Report - missing location

I looked up the time that this report was updated to fix for auto place generation, July 2016.  That means that it is probably in Gramps 4.2.4 and up.

Re: Descendant Report - missing location

Peter Griffin-2

Paul

Good news, the issue has been resolved. I upgraded to Gramps 4.2.6 and the problem disappeared.

Per the instructions:

  • I backed up the entire database
  • I downloaded the 4.2.6 Deb package.
  • I uninstalled 4.2.2
  • I executed the Deb package
  • I rebooted the system
  • I launched the new version of Gramps, it found my existing database only this time when I generated the Dependant Report all the missing data magically appeared.

Thank-you very much for your assistance

Regards

Peter Griffin
