Gramps 4.2.1 Win 7 Crashes and Focus Issue

David L McMurray
Finally pulled the trigger and converted from 3.9 to 4.2.1 last week, but
haven't used it much until this morning. Running Windows 7 64 bit. Still
have 3.9 installed.

Having 2 issues:

1. Gramps crashes when using the clipboard. Sometimes it will crash when
copying the first citation to the clipboard, but will always crash when
copying the 2nd citation to the clipboard. I've tried multiple people,
events, and citations.
2. After using Gramps for a short while, when editing a person or viewing a
census record from the gramplet, the main Gramps window will not allow a
subwindow to display. The editor window is opened behind the main window and
I can tell focus is shifted to it, but I have to drag the main window out of
the way to view the editor window. Minimizing the main window minimizes both
windows. Clicking Window below the title bar and selecting the editor will
not bring it to the front. This problem will continue until I restart
Gramps.

Ran the console when trying the clipboard and saw the following but it
didn't crash:

The only other troubleshooting I've done so far is Check and Repair the
Database and it said all was good. I can reproduce both problems
consistently.

Otherwise, I've been pleased with 4.2.1 so far, but still getting used to
the changes. Places seem to have converted as well as could be expected.
Thanks for all your good work here.

Dave

Re: Gramps 4.2.1 Win 7 Crashes and Focus Issue

Helge.Herz-2
I can confirm (1) and have filed an issue (#9001).
(2) is always filed e. g. as #8496 since 4.1.2 without an solution.

I thought to jump to 4.2.1 before but I'll stay at 4.1.x until these
issues are resolved.

I get the
"(gramps.exe:2244): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_notebook_get_tab_label:
assertion .."
too after the start of Gramps;
ans also the
"PyGIWarning .... Use gi.require_version ..."
for GtkSpell, GExiv2, OsmGpsMap and GooCanvas

Re: Gramps 4.2.1 Win 7 Crashes and Focus Issue

Nick Hall
In reply to this post by David L McMurray
David,

The notebook tab label issue has been fixed, but it didn't quite make it
into the last release.

The require version warnings shouldn't cause a problem.

Dialogs mapped without a transient parent could be the cause of windows
being opened behind the main application window.  There is already a bug
report open for this.  Please let us know of any dialogs that give this
warning when opened.

I don't see the other messages myself.  When do they occur?  What are
you doing at the time?

Nick.

This error message is (I believe) the one associated with
your problem number two:

> Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is
> discouraged.

In general, I believe our GUI and Windows developers know
what to do to fix it, but we need to find the specific place
(among thousands of lines of code) which has not been
fixed yet, as many already have.

It would really help us if you can accurately describe a
repeatable way to trigger that problem.  Perhaps some
specific sequence of having some "view" open and then
doing something in some specific fashion which causes
some specific window (dialog) to be created, which you
then do something specific to in order to get it to hide
or disappear.  We need to know the steps, the names
of the buttons and dialogs, etc.

Ideally it would be reported on a bug report, either a new
one or by adding a comment to one you know is for the
same problem.  But if that is not possible then an email
report is better than nothing.

Thank you.

Paul,

Thanks. I'll see if I can duplicate it sometime tomorrow. I tried for about 5 minutes just now and it worked fine.

Thanks,
Dave

Would you developers rather I update to 4.2.1-2 or continue to test 4.2.1-1?

I am aware of that but have no clue how to fix it.
Once when editor window is opened behind main window then all subsequent
window get opened that way. Only restarting Gramps help in that case.
Editors are Gramps custom widgets of "ManagedWindow" class and i don't
see anything wrong in their code. Note that they are subclass of
Gtk.Dialog class and gtk handles their appearance and behavior in
taskbar internally.

There are few others ""ordinary"" dialogs which still have no transient
parent set and will show warning:
"""Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is
discouraged."""

4.2.1-2
as that have patched gtk-3.18.2 which fix DnD errors (will be in
gtk-3.18.3 when released)

Re: Gramps 4.2.1 Win 7 Crashes and Focus Issue

David L McMurray
In reply to this post by Nick Hall
I upgraded from 4.2.1-1 to -2 and it works much better. Used it for several
hours yesterday and only experienced the hidden window issue once. It was so
far into my session that I couldn't remember what preceded the problem and I
wasn't running the console. I've made a console shortcut and plan on running
it from console for a while to try to capture some information.

I know there are many changes that may get better as time goes on, but here
are some other comments about things that worked one way in 3.9 and another
in 4.2.1:

3. The census gramplet doesn't get the name from the person view when it's
started or the surname from the selected person already entered in the
gramplet, forcing one to start from scratch selecting every person. Also,
seeing and editing the name in the census gramplet takes some extra steps if
it doesn't fit into the field.
4. The Detailed Ancestral Report doesn't use the preferred name display
settings, i.e. no nicknames, etc. 3.9 did.
5. The ToDo gramplet has changed from being a single note for all databases
to applying to only one person of one database. While I can see good points
for doing it this way, is there any equivalent to the old way until I can
adjust to the change?
6. Are there any other themes and if so, how does one change the theme.
Don't really care for so many things greyed or the drop-down menus the same
color as the background with no border around it. Seems like I might have
shrunk the font size in 3.9 some years ago to allow for more data on the
screen. I know things are different for us Windows step-children.

Thanks for a great product and your support,
Dave

In v4.2, the census addons are about to be replaced by new forms addons.

I'll have a look at the differences between versions.  I'm not sure what
you mean about editing the name.

You can attach a To Do note to any primary object.  There are gramplets
for each view and also for the Dashboard.

The old version is still available as a third-party addon if you prefer it.

There are many Gtk themes available.  Have a look here:

Re: Gramps 4.2.1 Win 7 Crashes and Focus Issue

Nick,

I picked one somewhat at random, extracted it to etc/themes/Libra-Dark, and
edited etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini to change the second line to
"#gtk-theme-name=Libra-Dark" with a linux friendly editor. Can't tell I
changed anything when I start gramps again. Am I missing something.

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Gramps 4.2.1 Win 7 Crashes and Focus Issue

David L McMurray
In reply to this post by Nick Hall
Nick,

What I meant is that normally the last 1.5 letters of the name are not
displayed. I kept picking longer names to add and the field grew, but always
wouldn't display the last 1.5 letters until I removed a long from the line
above and then it set itself to display the name below properly. I've been
in the habit of padding the name with a space if I didn't edit it so that it
would store the name as an attribute. What it requires now is click in the
field anywhere except on the last half-letter or the white space beyond and
press End or arrow to the end. I'll live with it until your new gramplet
comes out, though.

Themes should be in share/themes and not etc/themes,
"#" at beginning of line instruct interpreter to skip that line.

GrampsAIO64-4.2.1 comes with one additional theme called Ceti-2.
To activate it change second line in etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini from:
#gtk-theme-name=Ceti-2
to:
gtk-theme-name=Ceti-2

If you like to use other themes check if they are compatible with
Gtk-3.18 as that is version of Gtk which GrampsAIO64-4.2.1 use

Josip,

Thanks for the tip. I thought of that and then lost the thought before I
tried it. I was using the share/themes folder but made a mistake when I was
typing the email. Removing the # and changing to the WinXP theme now gives
me a thin blue line around all the drop-down menus, making them more
visible. Ceti-2 didn't do much for me personally, though.

Thanks,
Dave

Can you be more specific (or file a bug report)?

Most 4.2.x reports should allow you to use any name-format
you want, on a per-report basis.

Do you have your Edit-Preferences setting set to something
different than in your Detailed Ancestral Report?  Have you
tried the "default" setting in the report?

Etc.

I've been watching for the main window losing focus problem and have found
that double clicking on a child in the children gramplet seems to provoke it
more. Here is a sample of the console window. BTW, I'm still on 4.2.1-2 on
Windows 7 64bit. Don't know if 4.2.2 will be any better when it's available
for Windows.
