Gramps and Suse 10.1

Bugzilla from uwe.haider@gmx.net
Hi,

I can't start Gramps. Every time I try I get this:

22:49 noname:~ # gramps -v

    return codecs.utf_8_decode(input, errors, True)
UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode bytes in position 1-3: invalid data

I have no idea what's wrong. Something with my data - must I convert to utf8?

I use Suse 10.1, kernel 2.6.16.27-0.6-smp, Python
2.4.2, python-reportlab 1.21.1-0, gramps 2.2.4.3.1, with smart and the rbos-repository.

What can I do?

Uwe,

can you tell us your locale?
Just open a console, and type the command 'locale', and paste the
output in your
reply to the list.

Internally, gramps works with utf8, independent of your locale setting, so
gramps must be able to do conversions, which in your case fails for some
reason.

Nope, this seems to be iso-8859-15.
Can you use utf8 locale?

You can use "locale -a" to find out which
locales are available on your system.

If de_DE.utf8 is available, then you can do this:
   $ export LC_ALL=de_DE.utf8
   $ gramps

and see if this works for you.

Re: Gramps and Suse 10.1

Bugzilla from uwe.haider@gmx.net
That's it!! Thanks Alex.

One Question left:
Why is "LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8" iso-8859-15?
I always get trouble with this...

Do you have a got explanation-link for this? Best would be in German ;-)

Thanks a lot
Uwe

The @euro locales use the iso-8859-15 charset (i.e. encoding
for the accents, umlauts, etc).

The utf8 locales use the utf8 encoding. The utf8 encoding is
supported by most software and is the way of the future.

Not sure. I guess you better off by asking on some German forums.
This has nothing to do with gramps, it's a general issue.

I think that one is UTF-8, but you need the language
(LANG or LC_MESSAGES) to be UTF-8 too.  LC_ALL
states what all of these options should be.
