Issues with places from GEDCOM import

Agnes Charrel-Berthillier
Hi,

I am a Gramps newbie trying to figure out if this will be the right
software for me.

I am moving away from a GEDCOM based software (GenJ) trying to find
something a little bit less... constraining for the management of
sources and media. I started playing with Gramps 4.1 about a month ago,
then moved to Gramps 4.2 when it came out as I was still trying to get
places to work and there seemed to have been a lot of work there in the
new version.

I had my gramps DB from v4.1, with data imported from a GEDCOM where
places were stored in the PLAC field as comma delimited entries. The
content imported very nicely into Gramps places, with the comma
delimited long name importing as the title, leaving the name empty.

I was still working on cleaning that up into a nice place hierarchy,
with lat/lon and everything, in Gramps when I upgraded to 4.2. The
content of the title field was lost in the upgrade... leaving me with
over a hundred places (the ones where I had not manually added the Name
field) with no data whatsoever.

When I attempted to import my GEDCOM file again in an empty family
tree... the import also failed to pull the content from the PLAC field
into any of the Gramps place fields. Entries are created, but they are
again nameless.

I am still struggling trying to figure out how Gramps work. Am I missing
an import option somewhere, or is this a major functionality issue with
GEDCOM import/DB conversion in 4.2?

Agnes

This is a known bug:

8789: GEDCOM created by Ancestry.co.uk creates empty Place records
https://gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=8789

There is also a related bug:

8810: Place names are empty after upgrade from 4.0.4
https://gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=8810

I will fix them both for the v4.2.1 maintenance release.

By default, place titles are now generated using the place displayer and
the title field is not visible.  You can disable the place displayer in
the preferences.

Although a GEDCOM import will generally not contain enough information
to generate a hierarchy, it should not leave the name field empty.

Nick.

Thanks!

And thanks for the workaround. I disabled the displayer, copied and
pasted the relevant information to the name field, added the right parts
to the hierarchy and connected the bots together, then enabled the
displayer again.

All fixed now (fortunately I only had about 100 towns-level places in my
DB).

My PLAC fields in the Gedcom was somewhat structured (comma separated
values, per standard) -- it could have generated a workable hierarchy
albeit one that would have required some degree of cleaning up.

But once the import had gone through and I had started to mess with the
database it was a done deal anyway, so I am not going to argue much ;)

The PLAC tag can often be used to generate a hierarchy, but this is not
always the case.  Tidying up by hand is probably the best approach.

I have fixed for two bugs.  The fixes will be available in v4.2.1.

Nick.
