New Extended Sources bottombar gramplet

Nick Hall-6
Devs,

I have started to think about more advanced bottombar gramplets, and
have created a new Extended Sources bottombar gramplet in trunk.  It is
available in views with a navigation type of "Person".

It shows the sources for the active person and also sources for child
objects.

I seem to remember that someone requested something similar in the
Person Editor before.

Let me know if you think it might be useful, in which case I'll make it
available in gramps33.

Nick.

+1, nice!

In fact, can this just become the "Sources" gramplet? I don't see the
need for the other as this subsumes it, right?

PS - fixed a little typo, but I didn't regenerate the plugin:

Thanks for the bug fix - I have rebuilt the tgz file.

Yes, I was thinking of using it as the default Sources tab, but wanted
to get some feedback.  I suppose in gramps33 we should just provide it
as a third-party addon though.

Dear Nick:

If you are going to only commit it as a third-party plugin, then will you allow it to override the default sources tab that is already a part of Gramps?

I would suggest that it also become the default one and replaces the current one!

Nick work, and thank you!

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

We are at 3.3.0 and this is a single plugin. Let's not be overzealous. If it's an improvement over the current gramplet, then push it to 3.3 if well tested.  In a month or so we should stop doing such stuff, but now it is really early days and I'd like to avoid simple things to diverge too quickly from branch33.

Users can easily override the default sources tab.  Simply delete the tab and add another one.  The configuration is stored for the next time Gramps is started.

I would suggest that it also become the default one and replaces the current one!

Nick work, and thank you!

Thanks.  I'm glad you like it.

I was going to make it available as a third-party plugin for 3.3, but if people like it, then I'm happy for it to replace the Sources tab in 3.3.1.

Thinking along the same lines, it would be nice to extend the person Attributes gramplet to also include attributes attached to a person's event references.

I tend not to record data like occupation using events, because they are really attributes of other types of events - such as Census, Birth, Marriage etc, rather than events in their own right. If the Attributes gramplet included attributes from event references along with the event date then it would provide a nice attribute timeline.

Re: New Extended Sources bottombar gramplet

Nice feature,
For the new gramplet I miss information about the the related event or if it is an person source. For my real world data the relation field is empty in the most cases because a lot of my sources have more than one relation.
Without the information where the source was found it would be good to prevent to show the same source more than one time. (But I prefer the first suggestion)

Could we have (e.g. as context of a line of this gramplet) a function like "view the first gallery entry of a source" (there is still a long way to do that today)

I would like to suggest to have some thing like this gramplet on the person's source tab:
Show grouped by event name and event id all sources.

Helge,

Sorry for the delayed reply.   I have just moved this gramplet into
trunk and have been thinking about your comments.

Yes, it would be useful to know what object the listed source is
attached to.  Since the objects are in a hierarchy it was not obvious
how to add an extra column.  I will experiment with some ideas.

Which relation field?

I agree.  It would be better to add an extra column.

This is related to you feature request #4219.

We could try creating a gramplet containing both a list and an image.

I don't like the idea of adding information to an editor that doesn't
make editing easier.  Editors are primarily for editing and views are
for viewing the data.

Nick.

All of the data generated in your IT infrastructure is seriously valuable.
Why? It contains a definitive record of application performance, security
threats, fraudulent activity, and more. Splunk takes this data and makes
sense of it. IT sense. And common sense.

Which relation field?
...
Sorry, bad description: The field is called "Reference". And it's always empty for my real world data, because a lot of my sources have more than one reference. So this field is more or less useless for me.

That would be great.

I understand your arguments and agree too.
The final Gramplet should to this job. And that's Ok.
