README file???

robhealey1
Greetings:

I was looking in the current README file, and I found something in
there that says that it is REQUIRED!

The following package is needed for full translation of the interface
to your language:
   language-pack-gnome-xx
Translation of GTK elements to your language, with
xx your language code eg for Dutch you need
                    language-pack-gnome-nl. The translation of the
Gramps strings is included with the source code.

In all the time that I have been using gramps, since 2.2, I have never
needed or had to install: language-pack-gnome-xx !  I know that for me
to compile and install gramps from source, it does require intltool
and libtool ...

Now, one thing to take into consideration is that I live in the United
States and I speak American!  This probably have everything to do with
it!

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

Re: README file???

jerome
Rob,

I also need a linux distribution with only my locale ! ;)

These dependencies may sound rather like the selected locale on
installation ... ie. distributions are providing some set of locales
(desktop, applications, spell checker, menu, etc ...)

I suppose this section has been added for 'pure' power users who are
compiling like under BSD, Gentoo, or under some specific
distributions/desktop (KDE, mobile), where this type of package may be
missing.

We have the same type of issue with Linux Genealogy CD!

http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Linux_Genealogy_CD#Translations

Here, sure we can compile and run Gramps, but packagers should add this
dependency for users! If users need these translations, then to try to
install gramps package will inform to also have others packages for
properly translating all GTK labels (the core one, which are not a part
of Gramps).

Same issue with SVG and icons (GNOME, XFCE, KDE?).

All are these specific stuff and are making Gramps more friendly
according to user's desktop. Related to Gramps' GUI but in relation with
the OS desktop.

Best regards,
Jérôme

Benny Malengier
Yes,

Not everybody uses Gnome/GTK for the desktop, but would use Gramps.
