It seems to be related to bug fix for 4601 "W3C validation errors in web creation plugins"! (child of bug 4287: Make the WebReport W3C conform)

Bugs I've found tonight after installing newly-released 3.2.6:

- Pedigree in NarrativeWeb is broken.  Example:  http://charette.no-ip.com:1234/Charette/ppl/4/y/UQDNBC8R3K2A5DZPY4.html

- "Include link to active person on every page" in NarrativeWeb is broken.  No longer includes the link to the active/home person at all.  (This is a common regression...I've fixed this issue a half-dozen times over the last few years as it keeps getting broken by developers who don't usually use the feature.)

I've not entered tickets as it is 1:30am and I really need to get to bed.

Stéphane

The problem was introduced in:

http://gramps.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gramps/branches/maintenance/gramps32/src/plugins/webreport/NarrativeWeb.py?r1=16330&r2=16331&

I think I'll have that fixed shortly.

Doug,

How do you evaluate this?
Clearly people who use this section will see it and ask us questions on how to fix. Download of a plugin is not too hard, but if we get many questions ...

What do you mean? How do you see the error? It appears when you have
spouses on the Pedigree section of a person (see issue #4875).

Perhaps we need to issue another version, 3.2.6-2, or 3.2.7. Release often :)

I have also made changes to addons so that if we add a NarrativeWeb
addon with a higher version than core, it will be used instead, for
just this purpose.

I haven't yet rolled out the windows installer for 3.2.6 , .. if we are
going to issue another version then I'd hold off for that.
So my question, are we issuing another version, or should I create a
known buggy version?

Thanks

So my question, are we issuing another version, or should I create a
known buggy version?

Packagers are allowed to patch. Gentoo eg changes Gramps code before shipping, Debian did the same for a while. So if you follow the mailing list, you are aware of the problem, and you can use the latest version  of
http://gramps.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gramps/branches/maintenance/gramps32/src/plugins/webreport/NarrativeWeb.py?view=log

So you get the tar.gz of the release, and replace that file. With the many windows users that is probably the best.
I'd rather have that Doug ship narweb as a plugin in gramps-addons so as to allow to update it faster, as it is the part where most issues are still found in the 3.2.x version.

Benny

Ok, then I will make a NarrativeWeb.py addon that will have a higher
version number than Narrative Web in 3.2.6. I won't remove it from
core. When we release a 3.2.7, that Narrative Web (assuming additional
fixes) will have an even higher version number, and will become the
latest.

Did I understand correctly and this is what we want to do?

Ok, then I will make a NarrativeWeb.py addon that will have a higher
version number than Narrative Web in 3.2.6. I won't remove it from
core. When we release a 3.2.7, that Narrative Web (assuming additional
fixes) will have an even higher version number, and will become the
latest.

Did I understand correctly and this is what we want to do?

Yes, I would opt for this. It allows to ship other improvements to narweb without a full release.
I would do an announcement on the mailing list when this is implemented, so users know they can upgrade the plugin like this.

Ok, added to addons. If someone could test this:

1) Download new version of gramps32, version 3.2.6 (not from svn, as
that is effectively 3.2.7 now)
2) Run the Narrative Web report
3) See that spouses in the Pedigree view of a person are listed
improperly (see [1] for details)
4) Install the addon from
http://gramps.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gramps-addons/branches/gramps32/download/NarrativeWeb.addon.tgz
5) Reload plugins (or exit and restart)
6) Run the Narrative Web report again
7) See that spouses are listed correctly

To install an addon in 3.2: go to menu -> Help -> Plugin Manager ->
Install Addons -> Path to addon (enter above url) -> click "Install
Addon".

Unfortunately, I don't think we have a way of seeing the loaded addon
version number in gramps32.

As soon as I hear that someone was successful with this, I'll send a
note to users and add this url to the wiki addons for 3.2.

Re: Re : bugs in Gramps 3.2.6

Michaël Van Dorpe
On an Ubuntu Natty install, with the .deb of Gramps 3.2.6 I installed
from the Gramps website a couple of days ago, I tried the procedure set
out below (with a restart of gramps in between the installation of the
addon and the running of the report), and it does not seem to work. The
problem with the markup of the pedigree in the resulting narrative
website is still there.

Thanks for testing. I now realize that gramps32 is not a good as gramps33 :)

I had to rename the webreport in the addon, so that you'll have 2
Narrative Reports in your menu, one that has "1.0.1" in its name. Use
that one for the fix. (Gramps33 seamlessly allows replacement so the
steps would work for it). When a user gets 3.2.7, they can hide the
old version.

I see. I can test this this evening Central European Time.

I have a script which runs the narrative web report from the command line and uploads any changes to the report over ftp to my website using sitecopy. I will have to look into that script to make sure I invoke the correct report if it has a different name. Unless of course, it will be impossible to use the 1.0.1 report through the command line. In that case, I guess I can also replace the relevant narrweb.py (or whatever it is called) and re-install gramps.

I'm comfortable that I can get the desired result, but maybe these things should be taken into account when you decide whether to do a bug fix release for this one.

Doug,

  how this can work ?

We have two versions of the same files and Gramps-3.2.x ignores versions
  (automatic update).

You will be able to do everything that you did before, but the report
name is "Narrated Web Site 1.0.1".

Yes, this is a lot for the user to do. I think I would just make a 3.2.7.

They are not the same files... the original, core ones are with the
gramps install, and the plugin is in ~/.gramps/gramps32/plugins, they
have different version numbers, and they (now) have different names.
In gramps33, they can have the same names (I think).

I did not wanted to add too mutch details because installed package
means to deal/work with file rights/access (under MacOS, Windows,
gentoo, deb, rpm, etc ...). Any idea what should be written for the
NarrativeWeb issue under Gramps-3.2.6 ?

There are questions about this on the blog as well -

Thanks!
