The icons are small, as they have always been. It's the font size that
has changed to larger and it's the font size I want to make smaller.
There's no option that I can see to do this.

Hi David

I will assume you are mixing your metaphors.

Starting with Gramps 5.0, there is an addon that adds a Theme Tab to
Preferences, The addon is named, not surprisingly,  Themes. You can
set different Fonts and different font sizes.  You can also set
different themes but I have never found a better one than Adwaita, the
default.

But if you wanted LibreOffice help, the above gave you none.
